Transfiguration Sunday
Sermon Guide
Mark 9:2-8
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter, James and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling bright, such as no one[b] on earth could brighten them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us set up three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud, there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved;[c] listen to him!” Suddenly, when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
“I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher … You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool … or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.”
― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Meet Jesus on the mountain.
Let the Father tell you who Jesus is.
Listen to Jesus.
Because Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are recorded in history and biblically, you can believe that He is the Son of God and Saviour of the world.
“Those who have seen the glory can never be the same again.” – N.T. Wright
“The real sense of being in the presence of God is often not ecstasy and delight but a holy awe and even terror, for at such times human weakness and sin stand in sharp contrast to the holiness and omnipotence of God .” – Robert Stein
